Recalling the end of the steam era of Britain’s railways and the early years of nationalization, this is the final book from the partnership of David St John Thomas and Patrick Whitehouse, the latter having died in 1993. Taking its name from a 1940s text which opened the eyes of a new generation of enthusiasts, it features 32 paintings, many of them previously unpublished, by the railway artist Philip Hawkins, as well as many examples of the work of leading railway photographers.
